Founding Vision

Leaving an Always Green Legacy

When trees like a coastal redwood are cut down, the roots remain and can resprout new growth, but the stump itself also serves as an incubator, allowing other plants to grow and providing shelter for forest creatures even in death. That’s our role model at Sempervirens117.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Henry David Thoreau, Walden

In some sense, Sempervirens117 is a test of whether the American Dream still exists as a reality in the twenty-first century: whether someone of very modest means who is persistent, passionate, and knowledgable can achieve success using only their wits, their work ethic, and their reliance on publicly available resources, such as libraries, parks and open spaces, beaches, forest preserves, and the Internet.

Sempervirens117 is a Family Enterprise, and it intends to stay that way. It isn’t a for-profit company, by any means, but isn’t a traditional non-profit organization, either. It evades binary choices altogether in favor of what our founder calls “Base-3 Thinking,” or applied ternary logic.

Sempervirens117 is what we prefer to think of as a Pop-Up: it’s a “profit-optional project” whose ultimate fate still remains very much “up” in the air. All we really intend to do is leave behind an Always Green Legacy when we die.

To be more precise: everyone who currently works at Sempervirens117 has decided for their own deeply personal reasons not to have biological children. It’s not that we don’t like kids, and we have enormous respect for the dedication and sacrifices that parents and foster caregivers have to make – daily. Parenting is and will always remain valuable and rewarding work as long as there is a viable human presence on this planet we all call home.

Out of ecological considerations relating to the sheer scale of the human presence on the Earth and its ever-growing energy and resource needs, however, we’ve removed ourselves from the business of species reproduction altogether. We intend Sempervirens117 to be our legacy testifying to what we have done personally to create a stronger, greener, and more equitable global economy for all that is sustainable – but also amazingly beautiful – for many more generations to come.

Any revenue that Sempervirens117 generates from its Team Workshops and Corporate Retreats is immediately reinvested back into the company to improve its services and promote the value of its products more widely, so that we can also offer our teaching sessions to young people and lower-income communities – for free.

If we are fortunate enough to build a future company headquarters by acquiring land in the Santa Cruz Mountains, we intend to donate the property in perpetuity to San Mateo County or to a local non-profit Open Space Foundation or Land Trust.

Our dream is to create on the site an ADA accessible “augmented reality” redwood grove; to host a multimedia Digital Archive documenting key moments and milestones in the new green economy; and to build an Instructional Center to teach others the 17 Steps to Sustainability Outdoor Learning Method we have created at Sempervirens117 – all in order to ensure that the next 100 years of life on the planet will be healthy ones. And the 100 years after that, as well.

While we don’t accept donations here at Sempervirens117, we do love it when our clients and other visitors to our website share our mission with their friends and family on social media, or when they recommend our services to corporate groups in the U.S. or any other country in the world where sustainable solutions aren’t just an option but are by now a pressingly urgent priority. Please click the green Contact Us button below to get in touch with us by email and to follow us on social media.

Always Green Social Networks can indeed grow and flourish, but they need proper care and continuous stewardship over the land and resources on this planet to do so. We’re doing our part to extend Earth’s lifetime warranty for future generations of children, parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents to enjoy. The question is: are you?
